In about an hour, at 1:30 p.m. ET, President Obama is scheduled to sit down with ABC News for a taped interview during which, “everyone” now seems to think, he will clearly and unequivocally express his support for gay marriage.
I say “everyone” because this is one of those odd moments when the press and officialdom is primed and ready for news to happen but no one has any firm confirmation that any news will actually be made or, if it is made, what the exact news will be.
It’s all circumstantial: the White House isn’t trying to stifle the buzz, gay rights groups are saying privately that they are hearing through backchannels that it will be “good” news, and the White House press secretary has canceled his daily briefing. Those are all consistent with Obama making news on gay marriage in the ABC interview, but are by no means determinative.
Adding to lalaland quality of the moment is the fact that TV networks love to dribble out the news from their exclusive interviews over a period of hours and even days. So we may not know what Obama said for hours, and may not have a complete rendering of what he said, if anything, until tomorrow.
As they used to say in the analog days, stay tuned.
