Where Are You Android Users?

Over at BusinessInsider, Henry Blodget has a post up that gets to at a topic I’ve wondered a lot about — both as someone just interested in tech but also as a news publisher. In short, with so many Android devices out there, why does so little mobile traffic seem to come from them? Read More

A Deep Nerve

From TPM Reader KE on reaping the whirlwind …

I am sure that many people (like me) took the insults and disrespectful behavior towards President Obama in a very personal way.

Many of us have experienced racism from “non-racists” all too frequently. As an Asian-American, the questioning of Obama’s American-ness really strikes a raw nerve.

Reaping the Whirlwind?

TPM Reader JB says they shouldn’t be surprised …

Following up on JT’s email, I think there is one point to remember when Republicans keep saying that they are so surprised that core groups in the Obama electoral coalition, like African Americans, young voters, etc., were able to match or even exceed their 2008 turnout: Republicans did some pretty unbelievable, disrespectful and frankly unconscionable things to this President that JT’s cites: shouting “You Lie!” to him during the middle of his State of the Union address (something that was frankly never contemplated to be done to Clinton or Bush, despite rapid opposition), challenging his birthplace and religion, or Governor Brewer pointing her finger in his face on the tarmac, much of which was repeated nightly on places like Fox News.

Wham, Bam, Thank You, Mitt

TPM Reader JT has a few thoughts on Mitt getting the old heave-ho

Honestly, I find this a bit disturbing. I mean, two weeks ago all these people were defending everything Romney said. He lost the election in part because of some of those criticizing him now.

I can’t remember any Democratic presidential nominee being so vilified after a losing election, even Dukakis.

Ye Olde Black Friday Festival

As I mentioned below we have our round-up below of all the craziest Black Friday behavior today. As I see this today and as it seems to have evolved over the last decade or so I’m starting to wonder whether Black Friday isn’t evolving into some modern day version of one of those old inversion festivals from the Middle Ages. Great Moments in Consumerism

From Black Friday watch …

One shopper was cutting in line at the Sears when he got in a dispute with several other shoppers and punched one man in the face. The man he punched pulled a gun on him — though reports vary on whether he pointed the gun at his assailant or at the ground. One witness said the crowd scattered when the gun was pulled and that the assailant hid behind a refrigerator before fleeing the store.

Hiding behind the steeply discounted fridge takes it to the level of minor masterpiece.

Great Moments in Not-Racism

It seems like 21st century America is still experiencing its birth pangs in North Carolina.

Bob Dumas, it seems is the local right-wing shock jock in Raleigh, North Carolina. And coming off the election, he and his show G105 “Showgram” decided it would be a good idea to have a special float at the Saturday’s Raleigh WRAL Christmas Parade. Read More

The Infinite Loop

From TPM Reader WM on that Post oped …

The tell here is the fact that the congressional Republicans — and not just the conservative entertainment complex (what a wonderfully useful phrase) — are obsessively focused on who said what on the Sunday talkers, or whether Obama’s initial Rose Garden remarks were intentionally misleading, etc. — in other words, on the political spin, not the substance.

Worth Noting

With the experience of Justice Sotomayor’s confirmation process and the pre-process now underway for Susan Rice, it’s difficult not to conclude that congressional Republicans face particular obstacles being rational and not-awful when faced with female nominees for high office who are not white. This may sound like conclusions based on little data. But Sotomayor v. Kagan? Pretty little difference on the merits; big difference on the nature of the opposition. And something pretty similar for Rice. Read More
