The gist of the NRA argument about background checks is that because we’re not prosecuting everyone who tries to purchase a gun and fails a background check we should simply dispense with or not expand the background checks at all. According to an advanced estimate by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, GDP actually decreased at a 0.1 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2012, after having increased 3.1 percent in the previous quarter.
