I just heard that Ed Morgan has died at 97. You may not have heard of him but he was unquestionably one of the great American historians of the 20th century, an expert on the Colonial and Revolutionary Era, with a truly seminal influence in his field. He was not only a great historian but perhaps just as influential as the advisor to numerous other American historians of the last two – actually last three – generations. He may be best known for his work on New England Puritanism. But to me, American Slavery, American Freedom is still unforgettable, probably the book that spawned my interest in the field.

Thank you for posting about this. Although it pales in comparison to recent developments in Egypt (at least as of this hour), this “Obama supports the MB” meme is one that drives me especially batty.
It’s weird how often the folks with a “passion for freedom” end up being involved in neo-Confederate and white supremacist politics.
