I appreciate your latest post about how many mistakes the alleged perpetrator made, and we are all extremely thankful that he was as bad at this as he was. But that’s not an accident.
I suspect most New Yorkers look with some pride at how rapidly the NYPD working with the FBI, New Jersey police departments and other agencies, identified a prime suspect in the Chelsea bombing and took him into custody. But look at what Donald Trump said this morning on Fox and Friends. I wanted to note an emerging part of the bombing story. The perpetrator (or perpetrators) seems to have made numerous mistakes that led both to the lack of effectiveness of the attack (measured in carnage) and to what appears to be his rapid apprehension. Here are a few details.
Worth noting these two messages this morning.
Clinton Message: Be vigilant, not afraid.
Trump Message: Be afraid, also give me credit.
As a civilian, walking through what the NYPD is still treating as an active crime scene, what struck me most leaving my apartment for work was how much the entirety of the blast area is still almost entirely untouched. This makes perfect sense when you step back and think about it. NYPD, FBI et al are clearly doing a very meticulous investigation of the trajectory of the blast. The area is littered with numbered markers showing where certain objects fell. It’s simply striking to see in person.
There are numerous NYPD officers and FBI agents up and down the street. All residents of that block must receive a police escort to enter and leave the restricted area.
As he did after the Orlando shootings, Trump spends morning bragging that he “called it” on the Chelsea bombing, says: “I should be a newscaster because I called it before the news.”
