Chris Christie joins the burgeoning ‘vaccine choice’ movement. I’m not sure whether this was by design – an effort to appeal to fringe libertarians in the GOP primaries or just a goof because he wasn’t thinking before he opened his mouth. I would say this. It is uncharacteristic for almost everything we know about Christie. Whatever else you think of the guy, it is his calling card to respond with impatience and even anger to people who are quibbling or yapping about silly points. You’d expect Christie to the type barking “C’mon, take your shots, you idiots” and then fine someone to yell at. That tendency, when he’s identifying genuine nonsense, is one of his more endearing qualities. So this does make me wonder.
Huckabee: Forcing Christians to accept gay marriage is like making Jews eat pork.
Megyn Kelly trolls and provokes Huckabee in her own unique way: “Well I do have some news for you before I let you go. We’re not only swearing. We’re drinking, we’re smoking, we’re having premarital sex with birth control before we go to work, and sometimes boss around a bunch of men.” Watch.
We need your support.
With a new year underway, I want to take this opportunity to ask you join us by signing up for TPMPrime, our membership program. Prime is everything you already love about TPM, just more: a cleaner, feature-rich site with dramatically fewer ads, longform articles, special access to our reporters and editors, Q&As with outside experts and authors and some of the best discussions you can find anywhere on the web at The Hive. You also get TPM mobile with no ads, full RSS feeds and much more. I’ll be following up with explanations of the different benefits of membership in more detail. But today I want to start with probably the best reason to join Prime – the reason that brings all the others together – which is to become part of our community and support the work we do every day at TPM.
Last night, I flagged a press release from House Speaker John Boehner’s office in which – inter alia – Boehner says he told Israeli Ambassador Dermer not to inform the White House or the State Department about the speech to Congress Dermer and Boehner’s staff were planning. Dermer, according to Boehner, acknowledged the correctness of the request and agreed. Now Dermer himself is speaking. And he back up Boehner’s account.
Collier Meyerson has an arresting, deeply personal piece up at The Slice today about the emotional messiness of being a transnational adoptee of color. She and her best friend Sadye are both adopted and both brown-skinned, but there’s a big difference: Collier was born in the United States, and Sadye was born in the middle of a civil war in El Salvador.
Contrary to reports earlier today that he would run, Mitt Romney just announced he will not seek the presidency in 2016.
George Zimmerman is on to his third domestic violence incident since killing Trayvon Martin. And not just three incidents, three separate women: his ex-wife and then two successive girlfriends. Once again, the girlfriend has now recanted her account of George’s latest attack. So he will face no charges.
Presumably his killin’ finger remains itchy.
This must have been a truly special moment. At a gathering of Texas Muslims near the state capitol yesterday a protestor ran up to the podium during a press conference, grabbed the microphone and yelled Islam “will not dominate Texas.” Watch.
A proposed new law in Texas would allow teachers to use lethal force against students to protect school property.
