Schumer: “Someone goes into your house, takes your wife and children hostage and then, says, let’s negotiate over the price of your house.”

Putting It Into Perspective

TPM Reader FN asks for a deeper perspective on what’s happening …

As a Historian, any chance you could push for an essay signed by Historians —which puts into perspective and explains the roots and causes of the shutdown?

This does seem to be an important (possible turning point) event for the American experiment.

Clearly, what is going on is an attempt to overturn the 2012 election through undemocratic means.

California GOP Reaching Out

A reader was telling me this morning about how the California GOP, after a pretty much nonstop 20 year decline, had perhaps hit rock bottom and was turning to some of its more pragmatic or centrist leaders to make it relevant in the state again.

Discharge Petition In Sight?

Can the Democrats roll Boehner but getting a government-opening CR to the floor through a ‘discharge petition’? They think it’s time to try. Here’s our story.

I’m going to be keeping a tally of the number of House GOP moderates who’s pledged to support a discharge petition. We’ve tabulated, re-tabulated and checked the number several times. So far the official tally is: zero.

Harder To Shut Down Reality Than the Govt

Republicans are seizing on an anonymous quote from a senior administration official quoted in the Journal saying the White House is winning the shutdown fight and they don’t feel pressure to cave since the GOP is losing. Speaker Boehner has seized on this and with high outrage told a morning press conference “This Isn’t Some Damn Game!”

As I write in a piece I’m publishing later today, this is all of a piece with 95, 96, 98, 2011 and more.
