Washington Navy Yard is one of the off-the-beaten-path places I send family and friends who are visiting DC. The National Museum of the Navy there is not as grand as the Smithsonian fixtures, but it has some interesting exhibits and naval artifacts, it’s rarely crowded, and parking is easy.

Here’s a quick update on the still-unfolding mass shooting at the DC Navy Yard which began at around 8:30 this morning. Police say that at least 10 people were shot by the assailant. We’ve heard higher numbers but that seems to be the only clearly sourced number. Meanwhile, there have been numerous reports about numbers of dead. But the only report that seems solid is the Navy’s statement about “reports of fatalities” – presumably multiple deaths, but precise number unclear. [Late Update: The LAT is now quoting a Navy spokesman who says the Navy believes there are at least four dead in today’s shooting.]
