Back To Real Business … Like Defunding Obamacare

By essentially taking the Syria ball out of Congress’ court last night, President Obama has freed lawmakers to return to the agenda they had anticipated dealing with when they returned from the August recess. For House Republicans, first thing on the agenda is the defund Obamacare measure that leadership is hoping will placate conservatives while not forcing a government shutdown.

A vote could come as soon as Thursday. Not looking very good for this gambit so far. Sahil Kapur reports.

Keepin’ It Interesting

Hunter Walker wrote for us last month about the possibility of a close finish in the Democratic primary for NYC mayor and the legal and political chaos likely to follow — which is about where we are today.

To pinpoint the issue: Bill de Blasio has just enough votes right now to avoid a runoff. But just barely. And there are, according to the AP, some 30,000 absentee, provisional, and other ballots remaining to be counted. Plus a mandated recount of all the ballots.

All of this to determine whether de Blasio has to go through a runoff three weeks from now, on Oct. 1, or can move straight to the general election Nov. 5, in which he is expected to defeat Republican nominee Joe Lhota handily.
