MI GOP Rep: When The GOP Takes Over The WH, We’ll Finally Get To The Bottom Of The Birth Certificate

It’s baaaack.

Months after President Obama put to bed most remaining doubts about his origins by releasing his long-form birth certificate, a Republican member of Congress from Michigan is strongly suggesting the matter needs some attention from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Welcome back to the birther debate, courtesy of Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI).

Walberg took questions about Obama’s long-form certificate at town hall in Adrian, MI last Thursday. From the Adrian Daily Telegram (emphasis added):

Responding to two questioners who brought up the issue of Obama’s birth place, Walberg did not tell the questioners that the issue had been settled by Obama when he released his birth certificate in April.

“Regardless of whether the license that he showed is true or fake, I’ve not seen it other than what was portrayed in the news. The House is controlled by the majority party being the Republicans, the Senate by the Democrats, the attorney general by the Democrats. That’s the answer. One and a half years. One and a half years. That’s when we do the do-over,” Walberg said.

That sounds like he’s suggesting a Republican-led Dept. of Justice would treat the Obama birth certificate issue differently than the current one, and suggests he thinks the there’s still more investigating to be done. Walberg’s office did not respond to a request for clarification from TPM Tuesday.

Walberg told the crowd in Adrian that he’s moved on from the issue of Obama’s birthplace — but not because it was settled by the numerous facts about Obama’s life that have been available for years.

“Though I would like to have that question finally answered as much as anybody else, yet it takes my eye off the ball of all that I have to do,” he said. The Telegram reports “Walberg said he had made a ‘priority decision’ to concentrate on the budget and policy to ‘make a long-term difference for this country in a positive way.'”

Walberg is a notorious birther, one of the birtheriest of them all back when the issue still simmered just off the GOP front burner. In Sept. 2010, as a candidate, he told a radio show caller “I don’t know, I really don’t know” when asked if Obama was a Muslim. On another occasion, he suggested that Congress should use the threat of impeachment to force Obama to release the certificate.

Now he’s a member of the House GOP in good standing — on Tuesday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor gave him a shoutout on Twitter — and he’s still wondering about the legitimacy of the man in the Oval Office.
