Republican gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman is using former President Bill Clinton in a new double-whammy ad starring the most popular Democrat in the country and trying to suggest to California voters that Jerry Brown is a relic from years past.

Whitman’s new television ad features Clinton attacking Brown during one of their 1992 presidential primary debate. “He doesn’t tell people the truth,” Clinton says, pointing. There’s little love lost between the two Democrats.

The campaign released a statement from Whitman along with the ad:

“This ad is about Jerry Brown versus the truth. In 1992, Bill Clinton, CNN and a number of media outlets did a very effective job of exposing Jerry Brown’s real record as governor. Brown is making the same misleading claims today as he did then,” Whitman said.

As we’ve been reporting, Whitman has been hammering Brown using her millions of personal wealth to blanket the Golden State’s airwaves. Brown just went on television at the beginning of this week, and top Democratic operatives have suggested to TPMDC that her financial strength is going to make this an incredibly difficult race for Brown to win.

The TPM Poll Average of this race has Whitman leading 46.0%-44.2%.
