If there’s going to be a Democratic Senate primary in New Jersey, it’s going to be a nasty one. A day after an adviser to Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) told TPM Booker will run for Senate regardless of whether incumbent Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) seeks another term, Team Lautenberg is sniping at Booker on Twitter.
The tiff came after the National Rifle Association’s press conference on the Newtown, Conn. shootings Friday.
Lautenberg’s account tweeted this during the press conference:
#NRA leadership’s drive to fill our schools w/ more deadly guns & ammo is wildly out of touch w/ responsible gun owners & American public.

A few minutes later, this appeared on Booker’s account:
Can’t agree with much NRA head is saying right now BUT yes, I agree lets improve fed background checks for those mentally unfit to buy guns
— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) December 21, 2012
A little while later came this from Lautenberg:
Let me be clear: #NRA leadership is out of line & out of touch. Nothing they spew should be validated. 1.usa.gov/T6ee1X

It’s not known if the 88 year-old Lautenberg will run again. But Friday’s tweets suggest at least someone in Lautenberg land isn’t too happy with Booker’s recent moves.
