House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer — a top Democratic fundraiser and recruiter — says Republican disarray and an improving economy can put the House of Representatives back into his party’s hands.
“I think our chances are reasonably good that we can retake back the House,” Hoyer told a select group of reporters in his Capitol office. “And if the economy continues to perform as it’s performed, I think we will back the House.”
Hoyer acknowledged that redistricting after the 2010 elections, and the rise of conservative Super PACs have hurt Dem chances. But a confluence of economic growth, Republicans’ inability to govern, and a Dem President in campaign mode combine to give the party a real shot.
“I think no less than 50 of these districts are really solid opportunities for us,” Hoyer said. “I think the 76 are possible, that we can in all of those districts have a possibility of winning.”
