From The Reporter’s Notebook
President Donald Trump accused ‘Obama people’ of leaking less-than-favorable details about his tense phone calls with Australian and Mexican leaders, calling the leakers “disgraceful” in an interview with Fox News published Monday. TPM’s Kristin Salaky wrote that Trump accused holdovers from former President Barack Obama’s administration of sharing the information with reporters, telling Fox’s Judith Miller that he is working hard to replace them with his own picks.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “‘Populism’ has always been the wrong name for what Trumpism represents. The unifying message of Trumpism is nationalism, and particularly an aggressive, zero-sum nationalism. It is also summed up simply in “Make America Great Again.” The style may be ‘populist’ in some generic sense. But the message and agenda is nationalism. That is the focus around which all the actions of these rancorous 13 days come together into a unified whole – aggressive attacks on friends and foes alike, threats of tariffs against non-compliant foreign states, clampdowns on immigration, etc.”
Say What?!
“Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.“
– President Donald Trump on Monday morning continued his attempts to delegitimize the media by claiming that any “negative” poll must be “fake news.”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “A study done at Princeton several years ago reached the conclusion we were an oligarchy. Basically, it concluded that the opinions of the average voter mattered very little to elected officials. Instead, the wealthy and powerful’s wishes govern public policy. A pretty blatant example of this is the bailout of the rich following the 2008 economic meltdown. The true size of the bailout was never really disclosed. When one looks out at all the money used by the Fed, loan guarantees, etc., etc. the total bailout was to the tune of $21 trillion. And not a single one of these guys was even indicted! Furthermore, rules making financial advisors fiduciaries are going to be repealed before they even have gone into effect. Think about it, people we give money to for investment are not even required to be honest with us or to act in our best interest! Media consolidation has been going on for decades. Media monopolies control most of our news. With Donald Trump, we have a president who lost the popular vote by a significant margin, who proceeded to pack his cabinet with billionaires and millionaires. The 1% is no longer even hiding the fact they are running the country. They are out in the open.”
