From The Reporter’s Notebook
Cleveland officials said Wednesday that protestors and others congregating outside the GOP convention will be permitted to carry guns in keeping with Ohio’s open carry law, according to The Wall Street Journal. TPM’s Kristin Salaky reported that Mayor Frank G. Jackson and Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters that they are bound by Ohio’s gun laws to allow people be armed, though neither of them sounded too thrilled about it. “Our intent is to follow the law. And if the law says you can have open carry, that’s what it says. Whether I agree with it or not is another issue,” Jackson said, according to the Journal.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “The one political winner for the GOP coming out of years of milking the death of four Americans was uncovering the Clinton email story, which whatever you think of it on the merits has unquestionably inflicted real political harm on the soon-to-be Democratic nominee. The Benghazi ‘scandal’ itself has been a four year running gob of hate and derp sticky enough to grab on to it an almost limitless number of conspiracy theories, bogus hearings and almost all the residue ‘stab in the back’ revanchism available on the American hard right, which is quite a lot. The one thing it hasn’t done is generate the political benefits Republicans have hoped for from it.”
Say What?!
“Little bit difficult because of, you know, it’s a long ways away.”
– Trump explained why Sarah Palin won’t be at the GOP national convention by citing the distance between Alaska and Cleveland.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “There is also a high probability of a generally chaotic and mis-managed event. Internally, with the unprofessional Trump organization running things and externally with open carry and demonstrations and a general convening of professional wrestling Fans. I think the conventions will, somewhat, regularize the situation. ‘Presumptive nominee’ is not the same as ‘nominee’ just as ‘fiance’ is not the same as ‘husband.’ Donald Trump as ‘The Republican Nominee for President of the United States’ is such an absurdity that most of the public will recoil in horror. Trump standing on that big podium in prime time, with the balloons coming down and no support from the party’s elite is an image that cannot be photoshopped into normality. Once Hillary is ‘The Democratic Nominee for…’, much of the doubt about her disappears. She’s the nominee; the Democratic party is backing her; leaders of all factions of the party have sung her praises.”
