Rubio Says He’s Not Running For Office Right Now: ‘I’ll Be A Private Citizen’

The Gist: Marco Rubio said Thursday that he’s done running—for re-election, for Florida governor or to be anybody’s vice president. When his senate term is up, he said, he’ll be a “private citizen.”

From The Reporter’s Notebook

Ohio Governor John Kasich took to Twitter Wednesday to condemn Donald Trump’s recent comments that if he lost the convention, with a majority of delegates, there would be riots, TPM’s Kristin Salaky wrote. Kasich called Trump’s comments “unacceptable.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “It seems to me quite likely that with several Republican senators already teetering on the edge, the daily bad news of this drip drip drip is more than likely to deliver the Senate to the Democrats. And as those vulnerable senators (and perhaps others) get more and more squeezed, they’ll push to get out of under this burden. Not that that will be easy since allowing Garland through would cause a huge backlash on their right. In any case, this is what ‘the three nos’ was meant to avoid. And it’s why Senate Republicans put up increasingly hyperbolic threats to try to prevent Obama from making a nomination or – more likely – scare any nominees out of accepting. So if ‘the three nos’ were going to be this hard to sustain why did McConnell go down this path?”

“They might be rehabilitating that fellow with the mustache back there in Germany, because I saw a commercial against Donald Trump, a really vicious commercial. It was a commercial against Trump but I don’t think it’s having the effect that they want it to have.”

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From TPM Live Chat Guest and higher education expert Liz McMillen: “Wise people from either end of the spectrum have speculated whether the educational system could be better funded or whether it’s national controls or if it’s something else. What I can tell you is that the student population in the United States reflects all kinds of people—from students who’ve gone to top-notch high schools to those who’ve not, to older students who might be juggling work and families and classes, to international students who come from entirely different backgrounds. So the higher ed system has had to develop to serve their different needs, and one student might be better served by a community college than a four-year state university. So that could be an argument in favor of some autonomy. On the other hand, the current system of accreditation for higher ed, and to an extent the autonomy colleges currently experience—is under increasing scrutiny. People want to ensure that their college degree is worth the money and effort.”
