Jeff Sessions’ DOJ Signals Shift Away From Defense Of Transgender Rights

The Gist: In a procedural move in an ongoing case in Texas, the Department of Justice, which recently welcomed former Sen. Jeff Sessions as its new attorney general, took a step back from the department’s previous defense of Obama-era guidance protecting transgender students’ rights.

Trump Friend Hints Priebus May Be Latest Staffer On The Chopping Block

The Gist: Christopher Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax and a friend of President Donald Trump, signaled on Sunday that White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus may be in trouble. Protestors erupted into screams and boos at a town hall Saturday when a Republican official in New Port Richey, Florida brought up the old erroneous talking point that the Affordable Care Act mandates “death panels,” TPM’s Kristin Salaky reported. “Here’s the problems I have with The Affordable Health Care Act. Number one, there is a provision in there that anyone over the age of 74 has to go before what is effectively a death panel,” Bill Akins, secretary of the Pasco county Republican executive committee, said to screams from the crowd. “Yes, they do. Yes, they do. It’s in there, folks.”

Josh Marshall: “As the allegations surrounding National Security Advisor Michael Flynn escalate, I wanted to put together for my own use a timeline of key events in this story. The story, as I see it, is the pervasive evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 election and widespread, though murky, evidence of ties between the Russian government the Trump campaign.”

Say What?!

“Post updated – our deepest apologizes for the earlier typo.”

– The Department of Education apologized on Sunday for misspelling W.E.B. Du Bois’ name in a tweet posted hours earlier — but its apology contained another misspelling.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Bernie is not a terrible person. I just don’t understand all the hate and anger towards rep’s and sen’s who work for the Dem’s. Obama rented his list, I am sure the clinton’s keep close tabs on their own, so what is the big deal. Bernie wants Ellison as DNC chair, well Ellison is a respectable rep with a respectable record, so that sounds ok. I think Perez is ok too. I look forward to having a big tent and once again showing the american people that more people vote DEM than vote GOP. Personally I have a problem with the GOP, that is where I direct my anger and frustration and we, who agree that the GOP is the problem as well as the minority POTUS, will be working against these folks and their bad laws and ideas. I am working for the next two years to listen and hopefully change the deep red sea outside of our major cities. Hell Willie Nelson started farm aid, so why did farmers and ranchers vote red? Dem’s back policies to protect the environment, something that one would think would be important for rural folks, farmers and ranchers, yet they voted red. Me and others will work to change this, I think you should too.”
