In these dog days of summer, the campaigns are dropping the puns and unleashing the brutal attack ads. Priorities USA, the Super PAC supporting President Obama, is out with a new spot that more-or-less suggests Mitt Romney is responsible for the death of a laid-off steelworker’s wife. But Democratic officials are distancing themselves from the ad and denying its grim premise.
“Stop your bullshit, just say it,” Jon Stewart said Thursday. “Own it.”
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul defended the campaign from the ad, saying, blasphemously, that if the steelworker and his wife lived in Massachusetts, they would have had healthcare under Romney’s law there.
“Oh, you done fucked up now,” Stewart said. “No, no, no, no, no. Your response to this full-force punch is, ‘Well, if you want a president who believes the government should provide everyone with health care, you should vote for the guy who designed that plan, Mitt Romney?'”
