Video Reel: Back When Republicans Weren’t Going To Support Todd Akin

There were signs Wednesday that the Republican freeze out of Todd Akin may be starting to thaw.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee said it was rethinking its position on the Missouri Senate race after the final deadline for Akin to drop out passed Tuesday and conservative heavy-hitters like Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Rick Santorum signed on to help Akin out.

It’s not clear how far this will go. For now anyway, not all Republicans are following the NRSC’s lead. American Crossroads, the super PAC founded by Karl Rove that was among the first to pull its support for Akin after his “legitimate rape” comments, told TPM Wednesday that “nothing has changed.”

Still, the signs of a Republican return to Akin are a far cry from the days after Aug. 19, when Akin explained to a TV interviewer that women’s bodies prevent pregnancy in the case of “legitimate rape.”
