A House Republican accused journalist Glenn Greenwald Tuesday of selling stolen material because news outlets are paying for access to the documents leaked by Edward Snowden.
“For personal gain, he’s now selling his access to information, that’s how they’re terming it,” House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-MI), said after a hearing that included discussion of the national security leaks, Politico reported.
“A thief selling stolen material is a thief.”
Rogers alleged that “other nations’ press services” had provided information indicating that Greenwald had put the Snowden documents up for sale.
For his part, Greenwald firmly denied the accusation in another interview with Politico. He has been working as a freelance journalist under contract, he said, not selling the documents.
“What they’re trying to do is to remove it from the realm of journalism, so that they can then criminalize it,” Greenwald said. “That fact that I’ve gone around the world doing this reporting in different countries and publishing reporting around the world — that is something they want to stop.”
