Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) surrendered in the fight against Obamacare the day he signed off on the cabinet official who oversaw the health care overhaul, according to his tea party challenger.
Milton Wolf, a physician who’s mounting a primary challenge against Roberts, has taken to criticizing the incumbent for his vote to confirm Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
“You cannot say you oppose Obamacare when you crowned the queen of Obamacare,” Wolf told Politico in a story published Sunday.
As a central campaign issue in 2008, health care reform was always going to be at the top of President Obama’s agenda regardless of who was confirmed to lead HHS. Sebelius was tapped for the post after former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) withdrew his nomination amid problems over back taxes, a move that cast doubt over the reform effort.
Roberts voted against the Affordable Care Act and in October he called on Sebelius to take the fall for the law’s problematic rollout. The Senate Conservatives Fund announced earlier this month that it’s endorsing Wolf in the Kansas primary.
