The National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that a Metro-North train that derailed in New York this weekend leaving four people dead and more than 60 others injured entered a 30 mile per hour curve at approximately 82 miles per hour, citing a recovered black box from the crash site.

The brake pressure went to zero five seconds prior to a full stop of the locomotive. The NTSB official did not say the reason the train entered the curve at such a high speed.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said it was premature to assign blame for the incident.

“When I heard about the speed, I gulped,” he said in a press conference. “It sort of took my breath away. The fact that it was going 82 miles per hour…raises so many questions and is scary.”
