The House’s top two Republicans met with the top two Democrats privately on Wednesday, the ninth day of the government shutdown, according to senior aides.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) requested the meeting with Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), according to the Speaker’s office.
“Reps. Pelosi and Hoyer asked for the meeting, and as we’ve stated publicly, we’re willing to meet with any Democratic leader who is willing to talk,” said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel.
A Pelosi spokesman also confirmed the meeting but did not provide any details.
