MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews weighed in Thursday on a Republican spokesman’s characterization of Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) as an “empty dress,” suggesting that the flap is evidence that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is “scared” of his Democratic challenger.
“It’s just possible that McConnell and company are firing this spit balls at Lundergan Grimes because they’re scared of her because McConnell is the only sitting Republican in danger of losing his seat,” Matthews said.
National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brad Dayspring described Grimes earlier this week as an “empty dress” who “babbles incoherently,” a remark that has been denounced by Democrats like Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and McConnell’s GOP challenger Matt Bevin.
Dayspring argued Wednesday on Twitter that Democrats who were expressing outrage at his comments were wasting their time and proving his point.
