DeLay Has a Deal to Publish a Book
“DeLay said he’ll explain how ‘everything I’ve done in my career furthered the conservative cause’ and helped change the culture of Washington.
“DeLay said the working title is ‘No Retreat, No Surrender: The American Passion of Tom DeLay.’ He declined to reveal how much he’ll be paid. ‘Not as much as I wanted,’ he quipped.
“The book will be published by Penguin and should be ready by next spring, he said. Stephen Mansfield, author of ‘The Faith of George W. Bush,’ is working on the book with DeLay.” (AP)
Candidates Duplicate in AARP Survey
“Republicans in House races copied their party’s talking points and included parts of the answers as their own for an AARP survey. The answers related to Medicare, Social Security, insurance plans and retirement.
“Candidates in Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, South Carolina and Texas all submitted the sometimes word-for-word responses, which originated with the National Republican Congressional Committee….
“Van Taylor’s campaign in Texas said the language helps the candidate understand the issues.
“It’s only natural when we were running for Congress, he wanted to become as knowledgeable as he could on the issues,” said Casey Phillips, Taylor’s campaign manager.” (AP)

Security Measures Hike Secrecy Costs
“The federal government spent $7.7 billion last year to safeguard classified information — and that did not even include what the Central Intelligence Agency spent, says a new report by the federal Information Security Oversight Office. (The CIA’s costs, wouldn’t you know it, are classified.)
“Throw in another $1.5 billion spent by contractors who have ties to the government and access to some classified information, and the total cost for protecting government secrets last year was $9.2 billion, the report said. That was $1.2 billion more than was spent in 2004.” (WaPo)

Wisconsin Gov Candidate Campaign Won’t Comply with Order to Return $468,000
“Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green’s campaign said it won’t give back any of nearly $468,000 in campaign contributions it was ordered to dump Wednesday by the state Elections Board.
“The board told Green to get rid of political action committee contributions collected for the Green Bay congressman’s previous federal campaign – subsequently rolled into his state race – because the donors weren’t registered in Wisconsin when they wrote their checks.” (Madison.com)
