RNC Aide To Run For Alabama Congressional Seat

Wells Griffith, who serves as a deputy chief of staff for the Republican National Committee, filed paperwork to declare his candidacy for the open seat in the Alabama First Congressional District, AL.com reported Tuesday. He is expected to make a formal announcement next week.

Rep. Jo Bonner (R) is resigning from the seat effective Aug. 15 to take a job as a chancellor at the University of Alabama System.

Gov. Robert Bentley (R) said he plans to call a special election once the seat is officially vacant.

“I’ve given this decision a lot of thought and prayer and am humbled by the encouragement I have received from colleagues, neighbors, friends and family,” Griffith told AL.com. “We are united by a deep concern for the future of our country and the dangerous levels of debt government bureaucrats are putting on every American and future generations.”
