One of the Republican senators working on an alternative border security amendment to include in the final immigation reform bill said Thursday that his proposal should help alleviate GOP concerns.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who along with Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) is working on the new amendment, said during an appearance on MSNBC that he couldn’t elaborated on the measure’s details but expressed confidence that it would satisfy border hawks.
“For people who are concerned about border security, once they see what is in this bill, it’s almost overkill,” Corker said. “I think if that’s the issue that people have, I think everyone working together has come up with a way to deal with that issue.”
He added that he hopes the Senate will send the bill to the House of Representatives with “some momentum.”
The Corker-Hoeven amendment is considered an alternative to the more stringent border security amendment proposed by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), which posed a threat to the legislation’s ultimate passage.
