At least 30 people were injured in an explosion Thursday morning at a chemical plant in Geismar, La., according to the Associated Press.
Earlier in the day, CNN reported that a hazardous materials team was dispatched after a fire broke out shortly after the explosion at the Williams Olefins plant, which is south of Baton Rouge.
“It looked like a pretty big explosion … the firefighters are responding as needed,” witness Ryan Meador told local station WAFB.
According to the company’s website, the Williams Olefins plant produces approximately 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer-grade propylene each year.
