New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday will propose a bill requiring retail stores there to keep cigarettes hidden behind curtains, counters or cabinets, NBC New York reported.

Bloomberg, a former smoker, has been in the vanguard of the anti-tobacco movement throughout his mayoral tenure, instituting a ban on smoking in NYC bars during his first term.

The latest proposal, which will require approval from the City Council, could be seen as an extension of a campaign by the state of New York to reduce youth exposure to tobacco products. Bloomberg is approaching the conclusion of his third and final term, which will draw to a close at the end of 2013.
