President Obama spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping by phone Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed.
Carney said Obama congratulated China’s new president, who was formally elected Thursday. Carney did not say whether Obama and Xi discussed recent reports of cyber attacks on the U.S. that allegedly originated in China.
“I don’t have specifics from this phone call, but I can tell you that, at every level, when we engage with our counterparts in the Chinese government, we talk about all the range of issues that are important between us,” Carney said. “You know, all the substantial economic cooperation, security cooperation, and also the issues that, where we have disagreements or concerns.”
