The pro-environment advocacy group League of Conservation Voters announced Monday that it intends to spend at least $650,000 toward a field campaign on behalf of Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) in the Democratic primary for the special Senate election in Massachusetts.
LCV said it will knock on at least 219,000 doors by the April 30 primary. Markey, one of the more outspoken champions for pro-environment legislation in Congress, is vying for the Democratic nomination against the moderate Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA). Along with LCV, Markey has won the backing of establishment national Democrats and other progressive organizations. The liberal advocacy group MoveOn endorsed Markey last week
Polls have thus far have indicated that Markey is the heavy favorite to win the party’s nomination and compete in the special election, scheduled to be held June 25. The PollTracker Average shows the advantage Markey has built over Lynch with the primary a little more than a month away.
