Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith declined to confirm Tuesday that a man holed up in a cabin near Big Bear, Calif., was in fact Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop suspected of killing three people.

During a press conference, Smith said that authorities had received word around noon Tuesday that a man fitting Dorner’s description had stolen a vehicle. When the vehicle was found, a man resembling Dorner fled to a nearby cabin and exchanged fire with officers. But until he is in custody, Smith said, authorities cannot confirm his identity.
