Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) introduced new gun laws Wednesday, joining several other Democratic governors who have called for new gun restrictions following the Newtown shooting, Reuters reports.
“In the wake of too many tragedies, I have filed legislation to tackle the problem of gun violence and illegal firearm possession,” Patrick said in a statement.
Patrick’s proposals include tightening restrictions on the sales of guns and ammunition, requiring background checks for all gun purchases and an additional $5 million in funding for the state’s mental health programs to reduce violence.
Patrick will deliver his State of the State address Wednesday evening.
