BlackBerry 10, Research-In-Motion’s (RIM) new operating system due out January 30 and best hope to regain lost market share in the smartphone industry, will be found on at least six new devices to be released in 2013, the company’s chief management officer Frank Boulben confirmed to FierceWireless on Tuesday.
Further bolstering RIMs chances are favorable indications that major U.S. carriers will offer the devices. As Reuters reported Wednesday:
Executives at Verizon Communications (VZ.N), AT&T Inc (T.N) and T-Mobile USA all said they are looking forward to the devices, which will be crucial for RIM’s chances of regaining lost ground from rivals such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS).
BlackBerry’s comeback attempt follows that of Microsoft with its new Windows Phone 8 platform, which debuted in late October 2012 and which Microsoft recently said is selling better than its previous Windows Phone devices. But 2013 is shaping up to be an especially competitive year for smartphones, with open-source Linux company Canonical and Mozilla, maker of the Firefox browser, posied to release their own new smartphone operating systems this year.
