Only one day after removing former army chief Ri Yong-ho due to “illness,” North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has promoted a little-known general as Ri’s replacement. Hyon Yong-chol becomes the nation’s newest vice marshal, though the government’s statement did not make it clear if Hyon would replace Ri, who had no signs of physical ailment, as the leader of the armed forces.
Hyon is now one of four vice marshals in the army and is believed to have been named a general in 2010. He is not, however, currently part of the military commission that Kim chairs.
