Charlie Rangel Wins Primary Against Stiff Challenge

Rep. Charlie Rangel has won his Democratic primary in New York’s 13th District, against a stiff challenge from state Sen. Adriano Espaillat.

With 66 percent of precincts reporting, Rangel has 51 percent of the vote, compared with 32 percent for Espaillat. The Associated Press has projected Rangel as the winner.

Rangel was first elected to the House in 1970, but in the past few years faced a series of ethics controversies that forced his resignation as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee when Democrats controlled the chamber, and resulted in his censure by the House. This primary result, however, assures him another two years as the representative for this deep-blue Harlem district.
