The US State Department has sent representatives to meet with members of the Russian Foreign Ministry to attempt to pressure the Kremlin to support a transfer of power in Syria. Following on the heels of a second reported massacre in Syria, US State Department official Fred Hof reportedly spoke with Russian Deputy Foreign Ministers Gennady Gatilov and Mikhail Bogdanov to secure a transition strategy for the Assad regime.
Russia, which has thus far used its UN Security Council veto to prevent numerous sanctions against Syria, believes insurgents should halt the violence and begin discussions with the government.
