China has become the first nation in the world to reach over 1 billion mobile phone subscribers, according to statistics released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (via All Things D). In fact, China has 1.35 billion mobile subscribers to date, about 74 percent of its population, according to TechWireAsia. Compare that to the U.S., which had 322.8 million subscriptions as of June 2011, equivalent to 102.4 percent of the population, according to CTIA, a wireless industry trade group (that number included individuals with multiple subscriptions).
