The most commented-upon aspect of Romney’s speech at Ford Field came towards the end. Complimenting the assembled Michiganders on all the things he likes about their state, he said:
I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit made automobiles I drive a mustang and a Chevy pickup truck. Ann [his wife] drives a couple of Cadillacs actually. And I used to have a dodge truck so I used to have all three covered.”
This has already led even “establishment” media outlets such as ABC to comment that the remarks seem to reinforce the very impression he wants to avoid: that of an out-of-touch one percenter.
Newt Gingrich’s spokesman also twisted the knife via twitter:
“I am Mitt Romney and I drive a truck…and a Mustang.” Just doesn’t have the same Scott Brown ring to it.
