Bachmann Dodges Liberal Arts Students

A Bachmann campaign event abruptly switched from an open appearance to a “private fundraiser” on Tuesday evening after the event space was filled by sign-wielding Grinnell College students, The Des Moines Register reports.

“John Wayne Quincy Adams—Our Greatest Forefather,” read one of the signs carried by the students. Other signs supported gay marriage or recalled similar misstatements by the candidate.

Though Bachmann was scheduled to speak at 5:30, there was no sign of the candidate until about 6:40. The delay gave the local police time to arrive on scene and cordon off part of the farm with police tape.

When she arrived, Bachmann avoided speaking publicly from the barn, which was decorated with campaign posters and was clearly the intended event arena. Instead, she met privately with Family Leader donors.

“We really weren’t hoping to heckle her or anything,” a female student told the paper. “It’s just really disappointing that that’s what she assumed because we were college students.”
