Sen.-elect Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who defeated Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) in a special election earlier this month, will reportedly be sworn into the Senate on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post and Politico.

Arizona is expected to certify its election results on Monday, making Kelly’s win as well as President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the battleground state official.

According to the Post and Politico, Kelly’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for noon on Wednesday.

The swearing in of Kelly, who is married to former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ), will trim the Senate’s GOP majority down to 52-48.

Kelly unseated former congresswoman McSally after the sitting senator was appointed by Gov. Doug Ducey (R) last December to temporarily fill Sen. Jon Kyl’s (R-AZ) seat after he announced his resignation. Kyl was tapped to temporarily fill the late Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) seat.

TPM reached out to Kelly’s team for comment.

  1. Congratulations, Senator Kelly.

    You’ll do us proud.

  2. So as of wednesday, that’s 48. How many of the (five?) gop sicko senators are still in isolation?

  3. Welcome to the most non-deliberative body on G-d’s green Earth, Senator Kelly. As a former astronaut I’ll assume you don’t frustrate easily. Good luck with that in the Senate.

The Senate is supposed to be the place where the hot tea (legislation) goes to cool for awhile in the saucer of democracy. But the way it looks today, it’s simply the place where the tea evaporates in the cup before it has any time to spill onto that saucer.

The chair of the Arizona Republican Party Chemtrail Kelly Ward is still refusing to acknowledge that Biden won the state. What’s she going to do, deny Mark Kelly the seat? The astronaut ought to drop some science on her.
