President Donald Trump won’t accept the fact that Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden is beating him in the polls.
“I don’t believe the polls,” Trump said during an interview with Reuters on Wednesday. “I believe the people of this country are smart. And I don’t think that they will put a man in who’s incompetent.”
Additionally, Trump claimed that the upcoming election would not be a referendum on his response to the COVID-19 outbreak, which has come under heavy criticism as his administration struggles to help states combat medical supply shortages and other crises.
“I think it’s a referendum on a lot of things,” he told Reuters. “I think it’s going to be a referendum on all the things we’ve done and certainly this will be a part of it, but we’ve done a great job.”
CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post all reported on Wednesday that Trump is privately furious over his sinking polling numbers amid the pandemic, which led him to lash out at his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, last week.
“I’m not losing to Joe Biden,” Trump told Parscale during a profanity-laced phone call, according to the Post.
The President denied the reports early Thursday morning while referring to his poor polling figures as “made up nonsense.”
“Just told that Fake News @CNN is falsely reporting that I was recently shouting at my campaign manager over made up nonsense,” he tweeted. “Actually, he is doing a great job, I never shouted at him (been with me for years, including the 2016 win), & have no intention to do so. Just FAKE NEWS!”
The results of the 2016 election dispelled that notion.
