Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), the longest serving House member, appeared on MSNBC today with the gavel he used to pass Medicare in 1965.
“It’s a great one,” Dingell said of the gavel. “It’s the gavel I used when I presided over the passage of Medicare in nineteen-hundred and sixty-five. And you know what a great piece of legislation that is.”
He also said that it’s the same gavel he used to pass the House version of the health care bill back in November, adding: “I’m thinking that this is a gavel that will be used by Speaker Pelosi when she gavels the legislation into law later this evening.”
