Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) spoke out today against Republican support of health care reform protesters — some of whom shouted racial epithets and spat on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) over the weekend.
Clyburn said that “Saturday was just beyond the pale.”
He added that this type of behavior “cannot be separated from the Republican Party, when you’ve got Republican members standing on the floor applauding those people who are trying to disrupt the proceedings.”
Cummings, for his part, agreed: “We had a situation here where some of this was encouraged.”
Clyburn also referenced Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who downplayed these incidents on Sunday when he said that “when you use totalitarian tactics, people begin to act crazy.”
Clyburn: “What is totalitarian about having Barack Obama as President of the United States?”
