Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is considering jumping into the 2020 presidential race strongly enough that he called former Vice President Joe Biden last week to discuss his hypothetical bid.

According to the New York Times, he has also reached out to possible campaign staffers and held strategy meetings about how to mold a late-to-the-game bid.

While he is not yet fully decided, he’s motivated by a fear that none of the candidates currently in the race have sufficiently energized a big enough faction to beat President Donald Trump. The same concern prompted former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to possibly enter the race last week — he filed to run in Alabama on Friday due to the state’s early deadline but has not decided for sure.

Patrick faces a similar decision in New Hampshire, where he must file this week if he wants to run there.

I think I remember an article in the New Yorker months ago profiling Deval Patrick in the context of the presidential election. I think (if I recall) the conclusion of that article was that he wouldn’t run because his spouse was strongly against the idea. Isn’t one of the misgivings about him that he’s a Wall St. insider?

Remind me. Who was clamoring for him to join the already crowded field? An incisive voice that would bring folks together would be great, but who thinks he can play that role - other than him? Same question for Bloomberg.

  4. I don’t know much about Patrick, but I do share concerns about the current set of candidates.
Warren is the only one who really grabs people, IMO, but I really think she’s boxed herself into some positions which will hurt her in the general.
I thought Biden entered the race partly to slow down Sanders, but he’s not impressing.

I do like the way Warren makes billionaires cry. Nobody is helping her candidacy more than whiny billionaires.
