Mason-Dixon Poll: Handel Leads Deal By 5 Heading Into GOP’s GA-GOV Runoff

GA GOV Republican candidates Nathan Deal and Karen Handel

The Georgia Republican gubernatorial runoff is a day away, and new Mason-Dixon polling numbers echo other recent polls’ findings — this race remains far from decided. The latest survey shows respondents favoring former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel over former Rep. Nathan Deal, with a slight 47%-42% advantage.

Falling just outside of the surveys’s ±4.0 margin of error, these latest findings do not stray much from other recent polls conducted for the contest. An August 5 InsiderAdvantage poll put the race at 46%-46%. An earlier Landmark Communications survey gave Handel a more significant lead in the contest, 46%-37%. The Palin-backed “Mama Grizzly” is coming off of a first round primary victory, where she took in 34% of vote, compared to Deal’s 23%.

The winner of Tuesday’s runoff is set to face off against Democratic former Gov. Roy Barnes in the general election.

The TPM Poll Average gives Handel a 44.2%-41.0% edge over Deal. Check out TPMDC’s full coverage here.
