Outgoing Minnesota Governor and presumed presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty (R) turned over documents and artifacts from his administration to the Minnesota Historical Society this week, including a giant novelty “veto pen.”
Pawlenty’s office announced the move in a press release, touting the Republican’s veto prowess:
During his time in office, Governor Pawlenty issued 299 complete bill and line-item vetoes, including vetoing $7.5 billion in tax increases. In 2008, Pawlenty set a record for the most bill vetoes issued in one year by a Minnesota governor.
Pawlenty also turned over the “actual veto stamps he used.” Future generations of Minnesotans can rest easy in the knowledge that the power of the giant pen will be secure in the society’s vaults. If and when the time comes that the state once more requires its services, it will be at hand.
