Stephen Colbert isn’t letting up in his ribbing of Sen. Jon Kyl’s (R-AZ) false claim about Planned Parenthood, and his subsequent defense that that claim wasn’t intended to be a factual statement.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re all familiar with Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, the man who personally sabotaged the Apollo 13 mission,” Colbert said at the start of his program Tuesday night. “But we have forgiven him for that.”
“Of course, those last two sentences were not intended to be factual statements,” Colbert added. “He never sabotaged it, and we have never forgiven him.”
In the government shutdown showdown last week, Kyl said on the Senate floor that abortions made up 90% of Planned Parenthood’s services. But when he was proven wrong, Kyl’s office explained that the claim was never intended as a factual statement.
Colbert mocked Kyl’s comments on his show Monday night, and then took to Twitter with a string of fake facts about Jon Kyl, such as “Jon Kyl claims the craziest thing he’s ever done was that time he ate pancakes for dinner,” and “For the past ten years, Jon Kyl has been two children in a very convincing Jon Kyl suit.”
Colbert also lauded his fans for running with his joke and tweeting Jon Kyl jokes of their own at an amazing rate of 46 per minute.
“Which incidentally is the rate at which Jon Kyl catapults puppies into the sea,” Colbert said.
