With the economy still sputtering and gas prices rising, the percentage of Americans who approve of how President Obama has managed the economy has sunk to a new low, according a Marist poll released on Thursday.

In the poll, only 40% of registered voters said they approved of how Obama had handled the economy. Meanwhile, 57% said they disapproved of Obama’s job performance with respect to the economy, also a record in Marist’s polls.

That’s a 13-pint swing since January, when Marist found that 44% of registered voters approved of how Obama was managing the economy, compared to 48% who disapproved.

The current TPM Poll Average shows that 40.1% of Americans approve of Obama’s economic stewardship, versus 56.5% who say the opposite. And things have only been getting worse for Obama lately. Check the trend lines:

The Marist poll piles on top of a slew of recent surveys that have painted a bleak picture of how voters feel about the economy in general, and about how Obama has fared at the nation’s helm.

Two weeks ago, a Washington Post/ABC News poll showed that Americans were more pessimistic about the economy’s direction than they had been at any time since the early months of Obama’s presidency, when the country was bottoming out in the grips of a recession. In that poll, nearly half, 44%, of Americans said the economy was getting worse, while only 28% said it was getting better.

Obama’s approval rating on his overall job performance has also tanked in the past few weeks. After enjoying a brief bump in January, polls are now showing that just under half of all Americans disapprove of Obama’s job performance. The current TPM Poll Average pegs Obama’s approval rating at 45%, compared to a 49.8% disapproval rating.

The Marist poll was conducted April 10-14 among 1,084 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.0%.
