President Obama’s campaign put up another strong fundraising quarter, raising over $70 million combined for his re-election and the Democratic National Committee.
The third quarter total easily surpassed a public goal of $55 million, a drop off from an $86 million haul in the last filing period. No Republicans are likely to come close: Rick Perry has reported raising $17 million while Mitt Romney has yet to report his numbers, but put up $18 million in the second quarter. Herman Cain, who is currently leading the pack in multiple national polls, raised $2.5 million in his first quarter in the race and has not reported his most recent totals.
Obama campaign manager Jim Messina highlighted the number of small donors in an e-mail to supporters, noting that 98% of the over individual 766,000 contributions were $250 or less, averaging $56 each. Just over 600,000 people donated overall, pushing the overall total for the campaign to about 980,000.
“If I could sum up this last quarter in a few words: You came through,” Messina wrote.
